The Jikeli Houses

Ocnei no 4 Sibiu

The house on Ocnei Street no 2 (later changed to no 4) was built by Karl Jikeli in 1881. Karl Frederich Jikeli (1850-1925) was the grandson of Josef Jikeli who in 1836 became the owner of the pharmacy "La Coroana" through marriage with one of Kayser's daughters. She had inherited the pharmacy from her sister who was married to the descendant of Johann Gottlieb Schuster, the founder of the pharmacy.

Karl Jikeli initially had the pharmacy in the houses across Ocnei Street. After their demolition, he was forced to move it to Ocnei 1. He was married to Berta (1866-1956), daughter of Doctor Frederich Krasser. Berta and Karl had two sons: Dr Carl Frederich Jikeli (1886-1929) and Dr Otto Fritz Jikeli (1888-1960).

The fourth pharmacy to appear in Sibiu, "La Coroana", was founded in 1762 by Johann Gottlieb Schuster from Warenbruck, Saxony. After his death in 1802, the pharmacy was inherited by his son Friedrich Schuster, who married the daughter of pharmacist Kayser. Since they had no children, Schuster left the pharmacy to Kayser's niece, who married Josef Jikeli in 1836, making him co-owner of the pharmacy.

The pharmacy was located on the ground floor of a house across Ocnei Street, in the Small Square, in the Jikeli Houses. In 1848, when the houses began to be demolished, the pharmacy moved to Ocnei Street no 1, where both the Schuster and Jikeli families lived. After Jikeli's death in 1870, the property passed to his nephew Karl Jikeli, who built the new house on the stairs (Ocnei no 2) and moved the pharmacy there in 1882 under the name "Coroana Zur Krone".

In 1904 the pharmacy of "Pissel Karl and Schmidt" appeared, and from 1911 to 1942 it was run by Pissel Karl alone. From 1942 until nationalization in April 1949 it operated under the name "Coroana" Pharmacy owned by Fritz Zober. It continued to function as a pharmacy even during the communist period (Pharmacy no 20) until it was closed in the early 1990s.

The Bridge of Lies

Liegenbruecke

The most famous tourist attraction in Sibiu, the Bridge of Lies, is located only 5 meters from Casa Jikeli.

It was built in 1860. Chronologically, this bridge (actually a pedestrian walkway) is the third cast iron bridge built on the territory of present day Romania.

Many captivating legends are linked to the name of the Bridge of Lies. The most popular legend says that the bridge can hear lies and has an inexplicable power: every time someone lies, it starts to creak, and when the lies are big, it could even collapse. That is why many locals avoid telling untruths on this bridge.

Another legend says that dishonest merchants were thrown off this bridge by deceived customers, as well as witches whose predictions did not come true.

Moreover, lovers used to stroll over the bridge and swear eternal love. Some young women claimed to be pure, but after the wedding night when the truth was revealed, they were dragged to the bridge and thrown over the railing.
