Sibiu was founded in 1190 and became the most important city of the Saxons in Transylvania.
In 1241 the first fortress was destroyed by the Tatars, leaving alive around 100 people. However, by 1350 the locals had built three lines of walls, and in 1452 a fourth wall was raised to include the new Lower Town. Many of these medieval fortifications are still preserved today.
Three squares, connected to each other, form the old city center: the Large Square (Großer Ring), the Small Square (Kleiner Ring), and Huet Square (Huetplatz).
